1.45 York – Betfred Mobile Sports Stakes

The opening five furlong sprint handicap looks a tough nut to crack. Sixteen horses go to post and the bookmakers are 9-2 the field. That said, it’s the absolute rag that I’m willing to take a leap of faith with, LAST BID. Tim Easterby’s filly is 40-1 with plenty bookmakers despite her York course form of 11226. Five furlongs is her ideal trip and with York being a course she likes I’m willing to play at the prices. Now, you must be wondering why she is such a big price given the above credentials. She’s a hugely inconsistent filly and rarely runs good back to back races. She ran a poor race on her seasonal debut 29 days ago, but that might be a good thing (some how?) given her record. The sun is said to be shining in York and hopefully that sparks her into a bit of form. At 40-1 I’m willing to have a small play.

3.15 York – Betfred Hambleton Stakes

The Hambleton Stakes is always a competitive affair with many progressive horses lining up in big numbers. It’s no different this time round, but one horse stood out from the field when looking at the race, TWO FOR TWO. This nicely bred French import only cost his canny trainer €11,000 and he already looks a massive bargain. He’ll hope to bag the £20,983 first prize today and on recent form he looks like he’ll go very close. Three runs this campaign have yielded three placed efforts – one win, one second and one third. The form of all three run looks sound and his latest unlucky third suggests his current mark is still not beyond him. He went up a pound for finishing well in the competitive Hunt Cup at Thirsk. From a wide draw it was always going to prove tough to win, but he showed up well to stay on nicely late. He had a less than satisfactory trip as he met interference on a couple of occasions. He still looks to be progressing and today’s slightly slower ground will also aid his cause. York’s long straight will also suit, along with the likely strong gallop, for a horses who promises to stay a bit further. He has a perfect draw in seven too. It’s a competitive heat against solid older handicappers, but he may well be a stakes level horse and he should go close today.
